The Keynotes
Ana Mestre
Ana Sofia Mestre (ASM) received her degree in Chemistry (2003) from the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon University (FCUL) and completed her PhD in Technological Chemistry in 2010 from the same institution. Currently she is an Assistant Researcher at FCUL and principal investigator of EMPOWER+ project entitled “Engineered and reusable nanoporous carbons for advanced water treatment”. Her work has been mainly focused on the development of carbon materials exploring renewable resources and novel synthesis routes. The materials have been tested for the removal of pharmaceutical compounds, aiming to identify the property/performance relations. From 2016 to 2019 ASM integrated the team of LIFE Impetus project (entitled “Improving current barriers for controlling pharmaceutical compounds in urban wastewater treatment plants”) distinguished with the PT Global Water Award 2019 in Research + Development + Innovation due to the results with high “Technology Readiness Levels” and the WEX 2019 Global Award for “Innovation in Technology” for the environmental-friendly production of novel activated carbons from pine nut residues and their application for enhanced removal of pharmaceutical compounds in urban wastewater treatment plants. ASM has 48 publications in international indexed peer-reviewed journals with and H factor of 27, 6 book chapters, 5 invited keynotes, 66 oral communications and 125 posters.
Susete Pinteus
Susete Pinteus holds a PhD in Science, Technology and Management of the Sea since 2021 and is a researcher at MARE-IPLeiria. Susete main focus is the exploration of marine resources as source of bioactive compounds for new products development, having as main target molecules with antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-ageing, antitumor and antifouling properties. During her PhD, she focused on exploring marine invasive seaweeds, to raise awareness about their potential as valuable raw materials for industry, aiming the mitigation of their negative impacts on ecosystems. She is passionate about environmental sustainability issues, particularly in developing intelligent and efficient strategies for the development of high-value eco-friendly products.
